Gender Neutral???

In academic circles, as well as other places, I am finding a pronoun self-identifying trend. in profiles you are able to indicate your preferred pronouns. Mine would read: Jennifer Haertling she/her. The gender neutral pronouns them/their are being used more and more. For quite sometime, we have seen a shift from titles such as mailman to mail person to mail carrier To indicate the general neutral nature of the work. But is it really actually as gender neutral as we think.

This is an interesting article from Smithsonian Magazine that discusses this language usage.
